The Blurb

What do you do when the future is too late, and the present is counting down to an inevitable moment?

Elena Martinez has street smarts, the ability for perfect recall, and a deadline: if she doesn’t find a job before she turns eighteen, she’ll be homeless. But then she gets an unexpected offer from Aether Corporation, the powerful Los Angeles tech giant. Along with four other recruits–Adam, Chris, Trent, and Zoe–Elena is being sent on a secret mission to bring back data from the future. All they have to do is get Aether the information they need, and the five of them will be set for life. It’s an offer Elena can’t refuse.

But something goes wrong when the time travelers arrive in the future. And they are forced to break the only rule they were given–not to look into their own fates. Now they have twenty-four hours to get back to the present and find a way to stop a seemingly inevitable future–and a murder–from happening. But changing the timeline has deadly consequences too. Who can Elena trust as she fights to save her life?

The first book in an unforgettable series about rewriting your destiny in the city of dreams.

Elena is a 17 year old girl stuck in the foster system, due to turn 18. The story begins with her at a job interview. Clearly she is uneasy and it seems as though the manager interviewing her isn’t really interested in hiring her. Elena has an eidedic memory and has had to hide this part of her most of her life as it scares people.

One day, out of the blue, an woman from Aether Corporation comes to her house and tells her they know about what she can do and asks her to take part in a seemingly innocent experiment that will take up no more than a day of her time. She is told she will be paid well for her time. Elena is due to leave the care system when she turns 18, she has had no luck finding work and really could do with the money so she reluctantly agrees.

When she arrives at Aether they go through a series of medical checks, xrays , scans and blood tests. Just before the briefing about what project she is taking part in she meets Chris, Zoe and Trent, who all show signs of having been through the care system, and  Adam , a geeky looking you man who doesn’t look like he has ever been through the care system. She is curious about why he is there, why they have all been chosen and why they are mostly foster children. ( we later find out the reason they were recruited)

They are all told that they will be travelling ten years in to the future and they are to bring back as much information as possible. Although 24 hours will have passed in the future it will only have been 12 minutes in their time. None of them seem convinced that this is true but go along with it anyway…. how wrong could they be???

5 out of 5

I just want to say how ABSOLUTELY GRIPPING this story is. It is a mixture of murder mystery, sci-fi , fantasy, thriller, all rolled up in to 288 pages of pure genius. Don’t take my word for it.. Go on.. What are you waiting for..

I read this book in 4 hours and I would read it again and again.. Elizabeth Briggs is an amazingly creative writer and I would recommend this book 100%. cannot wait to get more of her books.

Thank you to Net Galley and Elizabeth Briggs for providing me with this amazing book.
