The Blurb

The kingdom of Poker was the place chosen by the gods to shelter the four elements -Air, Fire, Water and Earth- that made up the universe, on which the natural balance depends. Thus, the protection of each element was assigned to a Guardian from each one of the Domains of the kingdom: Hearts, Clubs, Spades and Diamonds.

The continuous conflicts arisen from the attempts to take over the elements sunk the kingdom into the strictest government under the Council supervision. Poker remained in a masked peace for a long time until an incident in the Confines, a place for criminals and other who dared to break the rules, will threaten the balance of the universe and the future of the kingdom. Atenea, the warrior leader of the army of Spades, will be the one in charge to prevent the chaos from spreading along the Domains as she is forced to face her own past demons and question her loyalty to the kingdom and its rules.

Right Okay so I know this is becoming a thing right now but seriously I do not seem to be coming across any books recently (bar one) that haven’t been great.

To start with, there is magic… yes I am an adult.. but who doesn’t love delving in to a book filled with magic to take you away from the stress of everyday adult life?

I love how the book is written. Veronica takes you a journey, introducing you slowly to each character. The way she provides details about each character is an art form. Just enough to keep you interested, but not too much that it bores you and you start to skip pages just to find out what happens.

You don’t find out who the four guardians are right from the start, which i think is pure genius. It kept me guessing. At one point I thought I knew who one was and then it turned out to be someone else and it was a nice little sneaky twist.

The Smile of the Harlequin is full of magic, mystery, suspense, betrayal, a little bit of love…..potentially (love that it isn’t all about the love), friendship, honour, demons from the past, good and evil. Everything you want in a book to keep you on your toes. I was actually genuinely gutted when it came to an end and it left it on a bit of a “What happens next” situation.. and the next book is not out yet!!

I don’t want to give anything away but what I will say is my favourite character is Atenea.. Read it and let me know if you agree.

Just in case you didn’t guess already . I give this a 5 out of 5.
