BOOK REVIEW: The Choir on Hope Street

The best things in life happen when you least expect them

Nat’s husband has just said the five words no one wants to hear – ‘I don’t love you anymore’.

Picture-perfect Caroline has to welcome her estranged mother into her house after she was forced out of an exclusive nursing home.

Living on the same street these two women couldn’t be more different. Until the local community centre is threatened, galvanising Caroline and the people of Hope Street into action. But when the only way to save the centre is to form a community choir – no one, least of all Nat, expects the results…

This spring, hope is coming!

Okay so to start with. From the get go I liked Nat. The story starts with a bang. The first sentence are those words Nat never wanted to hear from her husband and she doesn’t handle it very well. You could tell she was a good wife and so the mystery begins.. What happened? why did he decided this?

I disliked Caroline and her pompous attitude straight away. You could tell she definitely has a high opinion of herself and comes across as one of those judgmental women you try to avoid at all costs. She is all about appearance and making sure everybody knows how perfect her life is.

When it comes to light that the Community Hall is due to close and Caroline finds out Nat is a famous children’s author and she recruits her to help.  In comes Guy, a mysterious newcomer and from the start it is obvious he is hiding a secret, which makes for some very interesting reading. Who is he? What is he up to ? Why has he turned up now?

Guy offers to conduct the choir and the sign up for the national Choir Competition.

Nat and Caroline reluctantly become quite close in their own way  and you do get to see a more vulnerable side to Caroline . Especially when it comes to her relationship with her mother but there is still something about her that I don’t like. It is hard to put my finger on it.

Annie has a great ability to tell a story and evoke a reaction from her readers and I am looking forward to seeing what she brings out next.

I don’t normally read Chick Lit because it never really appealed to me. I never understood how a book could be interesting without any sort of thriller, horror, crime or fantasy aspect but I really enjoyed this book. It is a different kind of intrigue and excited. What  will Nat do? How will she handle her husband leaving? What was his reason for saying He didn’t love her any more? Will Caroline ever stomp being a pompus stuck up old wench?  What secrets will come out?

The Choir on Hope Street gets a 5 out of 5 from me.

MARCH WRAP UP: Why I have not been as active this month

So this month has been a weird one for me… I have had a few product reviews that I have done but not as many book reviews so I find that I have not been blogging as much.

I do feel a bit off my game this month in general though. I have missed out on twitter chats, I have recorded YouTube Videos and just not uploaded them!, I have drafted blog posts and just not finished them, I have barely read. I am not sure what is going on with me.

I do feel that sometimes in this community if you do go off the radar for a few weeks, few days even you do kinda get forgotten about and the engagement goes down. You have to be present and active all the time, which is difficult when you are just not feelin’ yourself.

One positive thing that came out of this month was finally meeting some bloggers in person that I have spent the last few month’s whatsapping and tweeting when I went to Blogcon in London in 18th March.

I enjoyed every bit of that weekend and I am already planning my 30th Birthday Weekend away there in October with my best friend for some shopping and more sight seeing. London is amazing.  If you ever get a chance to spend some time down there I would 100% recommend it.

If you would like to read some of my posts from this month I will link them down below and I will be posting a full review on where I stayed and my experience in the next week or so so keep an eye out for that.

BOOK REVIEW:Carnal Obsession: His Hearts Prisoner by Reily Garrett

Title: Carnal Obsession
Series: Carnal

Author: Reily Garrett

Genre: erotic romantic suspense

Life on the street molds emotional athletes.

Three years ago, her brother’s death marked the beginning of Kendra’s new life, an existence with no home, no family, and no friends. Time in the underground byways toughened her emotional shell with the loose association of like-minded street rats where survival meant compromise and constant vigilance.
Before he died, Billy had sent her a package in care of his teammate, Conner. For Kendra, re-entrance into polite society comes with a deadly price, as betrayal comes from both sides of the grave.
Conner Crofton owns the BDSM club Ambrosia. After failing to protect his teammate on their last covert mission, penance takes form as a promise to safeguard Billy’s little sister, a girl he’d unknowingly remanded to a world of darkness and uncertainty, deception and psychopathic stalkers.
The past will always haunt us. Each must earn forgiveness and trust as passion, guilt, deception, and betrayal, interweave a destiny formed long ago. A romantic suspense with a twist.

**Disclaimer: Thank you to Quill and Ink Tours and the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

Okay so this is a first for me when it comes to books I have received from Quill and Ink Tours.

I was stumped with the wording Reily used. I do love a good book but I am not used to reading such eloquent language. This is not to say other writers are worse it is just something that is quite blatantly obvious. At times it did distract from the book as there were words I was not familiar with haha!.. eyy well .. this Yorkshire lass needs to read a dictionary now and then I rekon!!

I think the relationship between the characters works well. They are believable and she is a feisty one haha.

BDSM is a running theme throughout although it is not hard core in your face, full on BDSM. This is not a soft romance so just be aware of this before you start to read.

If you like something a bit different then this is definitely a book for you. Carnal Obsessions is book 4 in the series but it works as a standalone

It was a great book I just felt that something was missing. I am going to be 1005 honest . I think because I have read quite a bit of the same genre recently this may be a book I have to come back to with fresh eyes after switch genres for a while.

I would like to stress this is no reflection on the author. Reily Garrett is a great writer and I did enjoy the book.

For now it is a 3 out of 5 from this misfit

This collection of short stories is sure to warm your heart and light the spirit of Christmas.

Happy Holidays!

So let’s set the scene. I am in my comfy clothes at home scrolling through the hundreds ( yes hundreds) of Kindle books I have and I decide to read Holiday Heartwarmers as I am not in the mood for anything too intense or dark. I curl up in bed with a hot cup of tea and settle in to my book. By the end I have a warm fuzzy feeling and I just feel very calm.

If you are looking for a book with very little action and you just want an easy read this is the book for you. The stories are sweet and definitely get you in to the holiday mood.

I stepped out of my comfort zone reading this and I am glad I did but this kind of book just isn’t for me. This is nothing against the authors this is just my personal preference. I prefer to be able sink my teeth in to a story and get to know the characters in depth, which you can’t do in this book.

Sorry that this isn’t a long review.. As the stories are so short i don’t want to go in to any detail and spoil them for you.

I did enjoy the stories. They were well written and each story was interesting for different reasons so if you like a nice easy chilled read I would recommend this.

Holiday Heartwarmers.. I give you a luke warm 3 out of 5

BOOK REVIEW: The Returning by Rachelle Dekker

Title: The Returning

Author: Rachelle Dekker

Format: Kindle

Publisher: Tyndale House

Series Status:  book 3

Genre:  Dystopian, Fantasy

Number of Pages:  433 Pages

They say the Awakening is coming.
That she’s the key.

But can she find her identity in the light
Before she perishes in the dark?

Twenty years have passed since Carrington and Remko Brant’s baby, Elise, was kidnapped and they were forced to leave her captive in the Authority City. Though they fled with the Seers far from Authority reach, they’ve never given up hope of rescuing their daughter from the man who betrayed them. Now Authority President, he’s ushered the city into a new era of “peace”—one where the Scientist Roth Reynard’s Genesis Serum has eradicated all memory of emotion or rebellion.

But the mysterious Aaron and his Seers are once again on the move, threatening the illusion the Authority has worked so hard to build. As the Seers send seven chosen warriors to rescue Elise and bring restoration to the Authority City, the lines are drawn for a final battle between light and darkness. The key to ultimate victory may rest within the strangely powerful girl who has felt forgotten but was never abandoned—a truth she’ll need to wage war against the powerful forces of evil.

I have to say that I hadn’t read any of Rachelle Dekker’s previous books but i was drawn to this one.

The story is very well written and although it is quite fast paced I didn’t find it overwhelming or confusing to keep up with.  I do wish I had read the previous two books first as I do feel that I may have understood a bit more about the background of the characters etc but that is my fault and nothing to do with the writer. For me it actually goes to show how great her writing is because I was still able to keep up with the story and understood it.

The Returning is not just a Good vs Evil it is also about Religion vs Science and people struggling to keep their faith. Now I am in now way a religious person so when I had initially read a few reviews about this and saw that religion did play a big part in the books I was a bit hesitant, but I am so glad I overcame that and decided to read it. I think the way religion is incorporated in to the book for the most part works, however there are times when it becomes repetitive. There are parts that are just so long and wordy I found myself skipping past them, which was a shame because i did enjoy the book.

I found myself, in parts on the edge of my seat, desperate to know what happened next. I could not put this book down. The chapters tended to end on little cliff hangers so me , being nosey and impatient by nature had to keep reading.  I love when an author writes in a way that just allows you to be totally engrossed in the pages, feeling everything the characters feel.

I don’t think I will be going back and reading the rest of the series but I was glad I read The Returning.

Overall I will give The Returning a 3 out of 5

*** Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Net Galley and Tyndale House Publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC. ***

Please note this post does also contain an affiliate link..come on help a girl out 😛

Here are a few questions that Rachelle has answered about The Returning

1. Aaron is a somewhat mysterious character throughout the series. What is he supposed to represent and what kind of spiritual leader is he?

I like to leave this one open, which I know isn’t really the answer you want. I want the reader to decide who he is to them. For me he’s a guiding light, an angel maybe, a representation of the spirit who communicates with us and leads us. He can be many things—mostly, though, he’s a great way to hear truth.

2. The theme of identity is explored in all three Seer books. How does forgiveness relate to identity?

For me, forgiveness is more about the one who feels wronged than the one who committed the wrong. What if, for a moment, you believed that nothing could harm you? That you, as a believer, are seated at the Father’s table and standing with him? Can anything harm the Father? If you believe no, then can anything harm you—the true you, the true spirited self? So then, forgiveness becomes more about letting go of false belief and stepping into the true identity that the Father gave to you. I know it’s radical, but belief like that could change the world, don’t you think?

3. How do you hope this book will resonate with your readers?

I hope, as with both of the other books, that the reader sees themselves in the characters and that the story causes them to look inward. To ask hard questions like, Who am I? What am I capable of? Do I see myself the way the Father does? Can I? I hope it challenges their idea of identity and then gives them hope to see themselves and others more clearly. Because that’s how these stories have impacted me, and we are all really just the same.

Have you read The Returning? What did you think?

BOOK REVIEW: A Chance at Forever

Title: A Chance at Forever

Author: K. B. Andrews

Series Status: Book One in the Chance Series

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Number of Pages:  218 Pages

**Disclaimer – I was given this book by Quill and Ink Book Tours in exchange for an honest review**

The Story.png

Mason knew where his life was going, until it was all taken away from him. Left with bitterness and resentment, he forces himself to live the life he never wanted.
Lennox came blowing into town looking for a new start. She had big dreams and would do anything to make them come true.
Lennox was just what Mason didn’t know he needed.
But what happens when Lennox is offered her dream?
Will Mason let his life walk away from him a second time, or will he fight to keep her?

**Side Note ***This story does contain mature themes, strong language, underage drinking, and sexual situations. It is intended for mature adults.

I have always been a sucker for a cheesy love story.. Give me a Rom Com over a horror film any day. As I read more and more I am realising I don’t feel the same way about romance in books as I do in films.

I have started to read a few books recently and I just couldn’t finish them. I thought they would be books I would like but I really struggled to enjoy them and get through them. I think for me when it comes to books Fantasy and thrillers are more my thing.

I did, however enjoy this book. It is a sweet love story told from the main characters points of view, which I think is genius. I do enjoy reading from the characters POV as I do think it gives the story a bit of an edge.

Mason and Lennox are great main Characters. I like how both characters have their fighter side and their softer side. Lennox isn’t this damsel in distress that always needs saving by her Romeo. She can stand on her own two feet and defend herself. I did at times forget how old mason was though as he doesn’t seem to act like a “typical” 19 years old.

The story is quite fast paced but you do get to learn a bit about the characters. As it is from their POV you don’t really get a lot of insight in to the stories and lives of the other characters in the book, which made the story between Lennox and Mason a lot more intense.

Although the synopsis states that had big dreams and would do anything to make them come true. That didn’t really come across in the book. It was very much about the relationship between Mason and Lennox. There are parts where it is focused on her career but it seems to happen more by chance than her actively pursuing it.

The frustrating thing for me is how dramatic it seemed.. without going in to too much detail as it would give the story away. the last chapter or so did get a bit too dramatic for me and after reading the synopsis for the second book I am not in any rush to read it as I do feel that it would frustrate me further..

I do really like Andrew’s style of writing and it really is a beautiful love story. I just don’t think it was for me.

All in all I give this a 3 out of 5

Okay my lovelies I would love to hear your thoughts…
